A .PLUGIN file is a software extension used to add specific features, assets, or business logic to a primary application. In the real world, the .PLUGIN extension is a completely fragmented, non-standardized umbrella term. It tells you almost nothing about the file's internal data. For example, Khaos Control Cloud uses it for compiled Windows EXE binaries to handle business logic. The TheoTown city builder game uses it to store plain text JSON data. macOS and Adobe Photoshop use it for bundled resource archives, while Galaxy Swapper uses it for Fortnite asset mods. Because the format is proprietary and wildly inconsistent across developers, users face massive challenges when trying to open or edit these files. You cannot simply double-click a .PLUGIN file; it must be placed in the exact directory expected by its parent software. The biggest disadvantage is the lack of transparency. An unknown .PLUGIN file could be a harmless ZIP archive, or it could be a dangerous executable.
