About PL3 files

The .PL3 extension is most frequently associated with the Test Partner 3 (TP3) system by Lansmont, used to record industrial shock, drop, and vibration data. These files contain high-fidelity transient event logs - essentially digital recordings of physical impacts used in packaging and durability testing. Because .PL3 files are proprietary binary logs generated by specific hardware sensors (accelerometers), they cannot be opened by standard text editors or office software. Users often encounter these files when sharing test results between engineering teams, only to find they lack the $10,000+ specialized software license required to view the waveforms. A secondary, legacy use of the format is for Harvard Graphics chart palettes, a now-obsolete presentation tool from the 1990s.

For Lansmont data, the only reliable conversion method is using the native Test Partner 3 software to "Print to File" (creating a PDF) or "Export" raw data to CSV or Microsoft Word for analysis. If you suspect the file is a rare Perl script variant, you can attempt to open it with a code editor like Notepad++ to view the plain text source.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PL3 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted KDT, BEF, ATP and PL2 files.

The PL3 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PL3 converter.
