About PJPEG files

A .PJPEG file is simply a standard JPEG image that has been encoded with "progressive" rendering. Unlike standard "baseline" JPEGs that load from top to bottom, a .PJPEG renders in multiple passes, starting as a blurry, low-resolution image and gradually sharpening as more data arrives. While this was a critical feature for the dial-up era, the specific .PJPEG file extension is non-standard and rarely used today. Most modern software saves progressive images with the standard JPG extension. Consequently, users run into issues where operating systems or applications fail to recognize the .PJPEG extension, leaving the file "orphaned" without a default viewer.

Because the format is mathematically a JPEG, you can sometimes simply rename the file to JPG to force it to open. However, this doesn't fix underlying metadata issues or guarantee the file isn't using an obscure encoding parameter. For maximum compatibility, the pragmatic move is to convert it. To fix file association errors on Windows or macOS, convert to standard JPG. If you need to use the image on a modern website with better compression, convert to WebP. For archiving or editing without adding further compression artifacts, converting to PNG or TIFF is recommended.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PJPEG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
