About PIO files
A .PIO file is a Pro Tools I/O Settings file used to save hardware input, output, bus, and insert routing configurations. Studio engineers use these files to transfer complex audio interface setups between different recording studios. The format is heavily utilized by Pro Tools, the industry-standard digital audio workstation developed by Avid Technology.
The main disadvantage of the .PIO format is its highly proprietary nature. It is completely useless outside of the Pro Tools ecosystem. You cannot import a .PIO file into alternative DAWs like Logic Pro or Ableton Live. Furthermore, many users mistakenly believe these files contain audio recordings. They do not; they only contain routing metadata and custom text labels for hardware channels.
Because users often need to document their studio setups or share configurations with engineers who use different software, converting the routing data to TXT, XML, or PDF is highly requested. Standard online converters fail to process .PIO files because they look for media streams instead of proprietary DAW settings. This file format is difficult to open or convert because only the original software can properly parse the routing matrices.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PIO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert PIO file to OCI, INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, ENV or PROPERTIES, you can use Pro Tools or similar software from the "Audio Hardware Routing Configuration" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to PIO, try Pro Tools or another comparable tool in the "Audio Hardware Routing Configuration" category.
The PIO Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PIO converter.
