Convert PIGS to another file type
To convert PIGS scenes to another format, you need Indigo Renderer or other 3D software.
Convert a file to PIGS
To convert other file formats to the "Scene Archive File" file type, you need software like Indigo Renderer or a similar tool.
About PIGS files
A .pigs file is a Packaged Indigo Renderer Scene File used to store photorealistic 3D rendering projects. It bundles a core XML-based igs file with all required external assets like 3D meshes, material definitions, and high-resolution textures into a single container. You typically open and render these files using Indigo Renderer by Glare Technologies, or via integrated plugins in modeling software like Blender and SketchUp.
Users often need to convert this file because the .pigs format is heavily restricted to the Indigo ecosystem. The main disadvantage is that recipients cannot view the 3D scene without a costly and complex rendering engine installed. Furthermore, because these files pack multiple high-resolution textures and dense geometric data, file sizes easily exceed several gigabytes, making web browser viewing or quick sharing impossible.
The most practical conversion targets are universal 3D formats like OBJ, FBX, or GLTF for the structural geometry, while extracting the internal textures to JPG or PNG. However, converting a .pigs file means losing the specific proprietary lighting, camera, and complex material setups unique to the Indigo rendering engine.
This file format is difficult to open or convert because it is a closed, proprietary archive. Often, only the original Indigo Renderer software can properly read, parse, or export the complex 3D data. Standard online converters fail because they cannot process the internal XML schema. Since our analysis detects the supported underlying embedded formats, viewing the XML text or extracting the internal textures and meshes may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PIGS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert PIGS file to OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D, STL, PLY or WRL, you can use Indigo Renderer or similar software from the "Packaged 3D Render Scene" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to PIGS, try Indigo Renderer or another comparable tool in the "Packaged 3D Render Scene" category.
The PIGS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PIGS converter.
