Convert a file to PIE

To convert other file formats to the "UX Prototype & Scripting" file type, you need software like ProtoPie or a similar tool.

About PIE files

The .pie file extension is a multi-format container primarily associated with ProtoPie interactive prototypes, though it serves distinct roles in scripting and firmware environments. As a ProtoPie project, the file contains high-fidelity interaction logic, assets, and sensor-aided triggers used by UX designers. The core challenge with these files is their proprietary nature; they require the ProtoPie Player or Studio desktop app to function, isolating stakeholders who lack the software or a paid subscription. For broader accessibility, designers often need to convert these interactions into MP4 or WEBM video for demonstrations, or PDF documentation for static flow reviews.

Alternatively, a .pie file may be a script written for GlovePIE (Programmable Input Emulator), a legacy utility used to map inputs from joysticks or VR gloves to keyboard macros. These scripts are plain text but often locked into the now-defunct software. Converting them to TXT allows users to view, edit, or migrate the logic to modern tools like AutoHotKey.

Critical Warning: If a .pie file appears unexpectedly on your system and cannot be opened, it may be a victim of Magniber ransomware, which appends this extension to encrypted user data. In this scenario, the file is not a valid format but a locked container requiring specific decryption tools rather than standard conversion.

In enterprise IT, Dell uses .pie (packaged within ZIP containers) for Dell Update Packages (DUP) to deliver system firmware. These are often large, opaque binaries that IT administrators may wish to inspect by converting the container extension to ZIP to extract individual drivers.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PIE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The PIE Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PIE converter.
