About PHR files

A .phr file typically belongs to one of three distinct categories, creating significant confusion for users. Most commonly in bioinformatics, it is a Protein Header File used by the NCBI BLAST software. These are binary files that function as the index/header component of a BLAST database (alongside pin and psq files). You cannot open them in a text editor; they must be processed using the blastdbcmd command-line tool to extract readable sequences into FASTA format.

Alternatively, in technical documentation, a .phr file is a RoboHelp Phrase List created by Adobe RoboHelp. These are simple text files used to store auto-complete phrases or search terms. While they are technically readable in Notepad, they are often locked inside legacy project structures. Users frequently convert these to CSV or TXT to migrate knowledge bases to modern platforms like MadCap Flare or Confluence.

Finally, in scientific crystallography, the file may contain Phase Data generated by the ARP/wARP software suite, used for building macromolecular models. Rare instances may also refer to synthesizer patch data for the ARP Odyssey, though this is largely a legacy or emulator-specific format.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PHR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PSOLIB, GED and FMF files.

The PHR Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PHR converter.
