About PHN files
A .PHN file most commonly functions as a Phonetic Transcription File associated with the TIMIT Acoustic-Phonetic Continuous Speech Corpus. These files contain time-aligned phonetic labels used by speech recognition researchers to map specific segments of an audio waveform to distinct phonemes. They are frequently processed using the HTK (Hidden Markov Model Toolkit). While valuable for linguistic analysis, the format is highly specialized; opening it in a standard text editor often reveals raw data that is difficult to interpret without the accompanying WAV audio source. Users often need to convert these into structured CSV or JSON formats to import the data into modern machine learning frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch.
Alternatively, a .PHN file may be a SIM Card Phonebook Backup created by legacy mobile management tools like Dekart SIM Manager or Chipcardmaster. These files store contact names and phone numbers extracted from a SIM card's elementary files. The key problem here is interoperability: modern smartphones (iOS and Android) do not natively support .PHN backups. To restore these contacts to a new device or import them into Outlook/Gmail, the file must be converted into a standard vCard (.VCF) or Comma-Separated Values (.CSV) format. Less commonly, the extension refers to a physics simulation scene from Algodoo (formerly Phun), which is a proprietary format used for educational physics sandboxes and is generally not convertible to other 3D formats.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PHN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert PHN file to EXE, ISO, BIN, CUE, PAK, WAD, PK3, PK4, BSP, MAP, SAV or DAT, you can use HTK or similar software from the "Phonetic Transcription Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to PHN, try HTK or another comparable tool in the "Phonetic Transcription Data" category.
The PHN Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PHN converter.
