About PCIO files

A .PCIO file is a specialized archive used by PlayingCards.io, a web-based virtual tabletop platform for playing card and board games. These files function as a complete backup of a game room, encapsulating the board state, custom widgets, card decks, automation scripts, and image assets.

The main challenge with .PCIO files is that they act as a "black box" outside of their native environment. You cannot double-click to view the game board, nor can you open them in standard design software like Adobe Illustrator. This proprietary wrapper creates friction for users who want to extract specific card art, edit the game logic (stored in JSON), or migrate their setup to other VTT platforms like Roll20.

Technically, a .PCIO file is simply a standard ZIP container with a different extension. For asset recovery or editing, the best conversion target is ZIP, which allows you to unzip the package and access the raw JSON configuration files and PNG images inside. For archiving game states without needing the assets separately, keeping the original format is best, but for cross-platform utility, extracting the contents is the necessary first step.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PCIO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ZIP files.
