About PCE files

The .PCE file extension is a notorious source of confusion because it serves two completely different worlds: retro gaming and industrial manufacturing. For many users, a .PCE file is a ROM image dump from a PC Engine (TurboGrafx-16) game cartridge, designed to be played on emulators like RetroArch or Ootake. These files are essentially digital copies of 1980s hardware data, often requiring specific headers to run correctly.

However, in professional environments, a .PCE file is frequently associated with CAD/CAM workflows. It typically represents a post-processor configuration or part file for software like Autodesk PowerMill (formerly Delcam) or GOELAN. In the fashion industry, it might be a pattern piece file from Gerber AccuMark. The primary problem here is proprietary lock-in: an Autodesk .PCE file is simply a configuration script or binary data that cannot be opened in standard viewers like AutoCAD or Adobe Reader. Similarly, legacy Drive Image backups (from the defunct PowerQuest) use this extension, trapping old data in an obsolete format that modern operating systems cannot mount.

To "convert" a .PCE file, you must first identify its origin. If it is a game ROM, it is ready for emulation but can be converted to BIN or ISO for burning to physical media. If it is a CAD/CAM file, conversion is restrictive; you typically need the original host software to export the geometry to universal exchange formats like DXF, IGES, or STEP.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PCE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted TW, STV and FW2 files.
