About PBK files
The .PBK extension primarily refers to the Microsoft Remote Access Phonebook, a configuration file used by Microsoft Windows to store connection settings for Dial-Up Networking (DUN) and Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). These files act as a directory, containing details like IP addresses, protocol settings, and authentication preferences in a structure similar to INI files. While convenient for the operating system, they present a significant challenge for administrators and users: they are essentially proprietary text containers that do not naturally open in a readable format when double-clicked - instead, they trigger the Windows connection dialer. This makes auditing connection details or migrating settings to a new system frustratingly opaque.
A secondary but notable use of the extension is the Pixel Bender Kernel file, a deprecated graphics shader language developed by Adobe. Formerly used in After Effects and Flash to create custom image filters, these files are now largely obsolete due to Adobe dropping support. Graphics engineers often need to convert these legacy kernels into modern GLSL or HLSL shader code to preserve their functionality in current workflows.
Whether you are dealing with network settings or legacy graphics code, the most practical solution is converting the file to a standard text format. For Windows Phonebooks, converting to TXT or CSV allows for easy inspection and bulk editing of VPN parameters. For Pixel Bender files, converting to plain text is the first step in porting the logic to modern standards.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PBK file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The PBK Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PBK converter.
