About PAX files

A .PAX file is most commonly a CAD apparel pattern file created by PAD System. These files store highly specialized 2D pattern pieces, grading rules, and marker data used in the garment manufacturing industry. Alternatively, the .PAX extension is used for POSIX Portable Archive Exchange files, a unified archive format designed to replace older TAR and CPIO formats on Unix systems. It is also used by Siemens NX as an XML-based CAD palette file to define reusable components, and by Blizzard Entertainment for game data archives in classic titles like Warcraft 3.

Opening a .PAX file is frustrating because its contents depend entirely on its origin. An apparel pattern requires an expensive, proprietary CAD license from PAD System or Tajima DG/ML. These CAD formats are completely locked down. You cannot open them in standard vector editors or view them in a web browser. Similarly, a POSIX archive requires command-line utilities on Linux or macOS, which alienates Windows users. Siemens NX palette files are just XML text, but without the core NX software, the referenced 3D components are useless.

You must convert .PAX files to make them accessible to external teams, clients, or standard software. For apparel patterns, convert to DXF (AAMA/ASTM standard) to send to other CAD systems. For viewing or printing patterns without CAD software, convert to PDF or SVG. If you are dealing with a POSIX archive, extracting or converting it to a standard ZIP or .TAR.GZ makes it easily accessible on Windows. Just drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.

The PAX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PAX converter.
