About PAT files
The .pat file extension is primarily used for pattern files in graphics software, system updates for NAS devices, and embroidery designs. Most commonly, it acts as an Adobe Photoshop Pattern file, storing repeating image textures used to fill shapes and backgrounds. Another major use is the Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) Installation file, which is a system update package used by Synology NAS drives to upgrade firmware. Other applications include AutoCAD Hatch Patterns for architectural drawings, CorelDRAW pattern fills, and PCStitch cross-stitch embroidery patterns. The main disadvantage of .pat files is their high fragmentation. Because the extension is shared across completely unrelated industries, the files are completely incompatible with each other. A Photoshop pattern cannot be opened by AutoCAD, and a Synology update file will crash if loaded into PCStitch. Furthermore, graphics-based .pat files are proprietary and cannot be viewed directly in web browsers or standard image viewers. To share a graphic pattern, you must convert it. For web use and sharing, convert graphic .pat files to PNG or JPG. For embroidery, you may need to export to a standard PDF.
