Opening a .paq8l file normally requires the exact command-line tool that created it, though some open-source GUI frontends like PeaZip offer partial support for the PAQ family. The fundamental disadvantage of the .paq8l format is its extreme resource consumption. It relies on a computationally heavy algorithm called context mixing, which requires massive amounts of RAM and CPU power. Compressing and decompressing can take hours, making it highly impractical for daily use.
