About P64 files
The .p64 file extension serves wildly different purposes depending on its origin, but it is most commonly a Commodore 64 NRZI flux pulse disk image or a Nintendo 64 animation file. In the retro gaming community, these files preserve the exact magnetic data of original floppy disks or store animation sequences for classic consoles. In rare cases, a .p64 file might be a legacy H.261 Video File developed in the 1990s, or a 64-bit Windows plugin library used for reverse-engineering software. To open emulator-based .p64 files, users rely on accurate emulators like VICE or Hoxs64. Video variants require the obsolete PVRG-P64 codec or compilation via FFmpeg. If the file is an IDA Pro plugin module, it must be loaded directly into Hex-Rays' proprietary disassembler software. These formats are incredibly restrictive. Commodore 64 flux images trap your data in a closed, retro ecosystem that modern operating systems cannot natively read. The 1990s H.261 video codec is completely unsupported by modern web browsers, smartphones, or standard media players. Meanwhile, IDA plugins are compiled C++ binaries that are useless outside of a $2,000 reverse-engineering software suite. You cannot preview these files, and simply double-clicking them will usually result in an error message. If your file contains video data, your best conversion targets are MP4 or MKV. This restores playback compatibility on modern devices, though you might encounter slight quality loss due to the age of the original compression. For Commodore 64 users, converting flux data to a more standard D64 or G64 disk image can improve emulator compatibility, although copy-protection metadata might be lost in the process. Converting or opening a .p64 file is notoriously difficult because you must first figure out which of these four obscure formats you actually have. Standard online converters fail to process them because they cannot distinguish a retro disk image from a video file or a compiled DLL. Fortunately, convert.guru takes a realistic approach: drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported. We inspect the file's binary header to identify the true format. If our analysis detects a supported underlying video stream or data structure, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

The P64 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our P64 converter.
