About G64 files
The .G64 file format primarily stores proprietary video surveillance archives created by Genetec Omnicast and Security Center systems. These files contain raw CCTV footage, often including metadata like timestamps and camera IDs, used for security investigations and legal evidence. In a completely different context, .G64 also functions as a Commodore 64 disk image format, storing bit-level representations of Commodore 1541 floppy disks using Group Coded Recording (GCR) for use in retro emulators like VICE. Handling .G64 video files is notoriously difficult. Because the format is highly proprietary and heavily encrypted to maintain the chain of evidence, you cannot open these files in standard media players like VLC or web browsers. Users are typically forced to download the bulky Genetec Video Player to view the footage, which causes friction when sharing evidence with external parties, lawyers, or law enforcement who lack the software. Similarly, the Commodore 64 disk images are useless outside of specialized emulators and cannot be extracted easily by modern operating systems. For maximum compatibility, you must convert .G64 video files to standard formats. For universal playback and sharing, convert to MP4. If you need to edit the footage in traditional NLE software like Adobe Premiere Pro, converting to AVI or MOV is highly recommended. For Commodore users, converting to the more common D64 format improves compatibility with a wider range of hardware emulators.
