About OSAX files

A .osax file is an Open Scripting Architecture eXtension, more commonly known as an AppleScript Scripting Addition. These files act as plugins on macOS to add new, custom commands to the native AppleScript vocabulary. Developers use them to enable scripts to perform tasks not supported by the default system. They are typically managed and viewed using the native Script Editor or advanced third-party tools like Script Debugger.

Working with .osax files presents significant challenges. First, they are proprietary, compiled macOS bundles. They are entirely useless on a Windows or Linux machine. Second, Apple has heavily deprecated the use of third-party scripting additions in modern macOS versions due to System Integrity Protection (SIP). Installing them requires bypassing security features, making old files largely obsolete and frustrating to use today. They often lock users into legacy workflows that no longer function on current hardware.

Because a .osax file is a compiled binary bundle rather than a standard document or image, direct conversion to a format like PDF or JPG is impossible. The most common requirement is extracting the internal AppleScript dictionary (the text that defines the custom commands) or the embedded resources like PLIST configuration files and PNG icons.

Standard online converters fail to process these files because they do not understand macOS bundle structures or compiled binary formats. This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert outside of its native environment. Our analysis engine can inspect the internal bundle structure of the .osax file, display internal text dictionaries, and extract underlying embedded assets without needing a Mac.

Convert.Guru analyzes your OSAX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The OSAX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OSAX converter.
