About ORIG files
An .ORIG file is a backup copy created automatically by software applications, version control systems, or update utilities to preserve the state of a file before modification. These are not unique file types with their own structure; rather, they are standard files (like JPG, EXE, or text files) that have had the .orig extension appended to prevent them from being overwritten.
A common difficulty is that operating systems do not recognize the .ORIG extension, leaving users unable to open them with a double-click even though the underlying data is valid. For example, the censorship-circumvention tool Psiphon creates .orig files during self-updates to ensure the previous version remains available if the update fails. Similarly, the Unix patch utility generates them when applying code differences.
Because the format varies based on the source, the best approach is to identify the original file signature.
For Recovery: Convert to PDF or JPG if the source was a document or image to verify the content without risking execution.
For Development: Convert to TXT to inspect code differences from patch operations.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ORIG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The ORIG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ORIG converter.
