The .gxf extension represents two very different, specialized file types that often confuse users due to their proprietary nature.
The most common format (approx. 63%) is the General eXchange Format, a broadcast media container developed by Grass Valley (SMPTE 360M). While excellent for transferring media between professional video servers like the K2, it is a nightmare for standard playback. Most desktop players (like Windows Media Player) cannot open these files, and even versatile editors like Adobe Premiere Pro may require specific legacy codecs or re-wrapping to function correctly. The files are often massive, uncompressed or lightly compressed (MPEG-2, DV), making them unsuitable for web sharing. For viewing, you should convert these to MP4 (H.264) or MKV. For editing, transcode them to ProRes or DNxHD/HR to strip away the server-specific container overhead.
The second type (approx. 16%) is the Grid eXchange Format used by Seequent Oasis montaj. These are binary files storing geoscientific grid data (gravity, magnetic, or geochemical surveys). They are strictly proprietary and "locked" to the Geosoft ecosystem. If you need to visualize this data in standard GIS software like QGIS or ArcGIS, you must convert the grid data into a GeoTIFF, ASC (ArcInfo ASCII Grid), or CSV format. Trying to open these in a video player will simply fail.
