About GXF files

The .GXF file is primarily a General eXchange Format video container used in professional television broadcasting. Originally developed by Grass Valley, it is designed to store motion video, audio tracks, timecode, and technical metadata. A secondary use for .GXF is as a Geoscience Grid data file used by Geosoft Oasis montaj for mapping and 3D geological modeling.

Opening a .GXF video file is notoriously difficult for standard users. It is an enterprise-level broadcast format standardized as SMPTE 360M. Consumer media players like QuickTime or Windows Media Player cannot decode it. Furthermore, these files are normally uncompressed or use older MPEG-2 compression, meaning they are massive - frequently exceeding 100GB. They are meant for broadcast servers, not consumer PCs. Geosoft Grid .GXF files face a similar problem; they contain proprietary spatial data that requires a high-cost commercial subscription to open.

Because of these extreme compatibility limits, you must convert .GXF files for normal use. For broadcast video files, convert to MP4 (H.264) for web streaming and mobile playback, MOV for editing in Adobe Premiere, or MKV for archiving. For Geosoft Grid data, converting the raw coordinate data to a CSV format is the most pragmatic way to view it without an expensive license.
