About OEX files

The .OEX file format is a legacy browser add-on package created for the classic Opera web browser (versions 11 and 12). These files contain web technologies like HTML, CSS, and JS scripts bundled together to modify the browser's functionality or appearance. For historical context, refer to the Opera web browser Wikipedia page.

Users typically need to convert or extract these files because the format is entirely obsolete. In 2013, Opera abandoned its proprietary Presto rendering engine in favor of the Chromium-based Blink engine. As a result, modern Opera browsers rely on Chrome-style CRX or NEX extensions. You cannot install an .OEX file on any modern web browser.

The best workaround is to convert or extract the .OEX file into a ZIP archive. By extracting the archive, developers can recover the original source code, images, and text. However, porting the extension to a modern browser requires manually rewriting the JavaScript to comply with current Chromium Extension APIs.

Automated conversion from .OEX to a working CRX is virtually impossible because the underlying programming interfaces are incompatible. Standard online converters fail to process these files because they are software packages, not media files.

Convert.Guru analyzes your OEX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The OEX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OEX converter.
