About NWV files
The .nwv extension is primarily associated with the NIST SPHERE (SPeech HEader Resources) file format, a legacy container developed by the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) for speech recognition research and scoring. These files are typically found in older acoustic datasets and speech corpora used by linguists and data scientists.
The main limitation with .nwv files is their specialized structure: they consist of an ASCII text header (describing sample rate, encoding, and channel count) followed by binary audio data (often µ-law or PCM). Because of this proprietary header, standard media players like VLC Media Player or Windows Media Player often fail to recognize them, treating them as corrupt files or playing static. Furthermore, opening them in audio editors like Audacity often requires manually importing them as "Raw Data" and guessing the offset, which is tedious and error-prone.
For practical use, the best workflow is to convert .nwv files to WAV format. This strips the research-specific header while preserving the lossless audio quality, making the file compatible with virtually all modern audio software and DAWs. For web sharing or quick archiving where space is a concern, converting to MP3 is efficient, though lossy. If you are dealing with the rare variant created by Nuance Dragon (User Archive), be aware these are often proprietary voice profile backups and may not contain extractable audio.
Convert.Guru analyzes your NWV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert NWV file to INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, ENV, PROPERTIES or RC, you can use NIST SCTK or similar software from the "Speech Recognition Audio Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to NWV, try NIST SCTK or another comparable tool in the "Speech Recognition Audio Data" category.
The NWV Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NWV converter.
