About NWCAB files

The .NWCAB file extension is a proprietary cabinet file used by older, discontinued versions of Neat desktop software, originally known as NeatWorks or NeatReceipts. It acts as a local database container designed to store scanned receipts, business documents, contacts, and their associated OCR-extracted metadata. The primary disadvantage of a .NWCAB file is its heavily locked-in, legacy ecosystem. The Neat Company discontinued its local desktop software in favor of a subscription-based cloud model. As a result, users are frequently locked out of their own financial data and unable to open their files without paying for costly cloud migrations or maintaining vulnerable, obsolete Windows operating systems. Standard file browsers and archivers cannot natively read the internal folder structure or extract the data. Because of this, users desperately need to convert .NWCAB files into standard, future-proof formats.
