About NSS files
The .NSS file format primarily functions as a source code script for the Neverwinter Nights game engine, developed by BioWare. These files contain plain-text NWScript code, a proprietary C-like language used to control AI, trigger events, and modify game behavior. A secondary, but highly common use for .NSS is as a Network Security Services database file utilized by Mozilla applications (like Firefox and Thunderbird) to store certificates, keys, and security configurations. These database files are typically formatted as standard SQLite databases. Users often struggle with .NSS files because they lack universal default associations in operating systems. Game modders find that uncompiled .NSS scripts are useless to the game engine until compiled. Security researchers and sysadmins dealing with Mozilla databases face locked, proprietary structures that are difficult to query without specialized tools.
