The .NSS file extension primarily represents source code scripts written in NWScript, a C-based language developed by BioWare for the Aurora Engine. These files control game logic, dialogue, and events in classic RPGs like Neverwinter Nights and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. While .NSS files are human-readable text, the game engine cannot execute them directly; they must be compiled into binary NCS files. Users often struggle to open them because Windows does not associate the extension with text editors by default, or they attempt to run the uncompiled source in-game without success. A secondary, distinct format uses the .NSS extension for Network Security Services databases (associated with Mozilla), which are often structured as SQLite databases containing security certificates.
