Convert a file to NSI

To convert other file formats to the "Installer Script" file type, you need software like NSIS or a similar tool.

About NSI files

.NSI files are predominantly text-based scripts used by the Nullsoft Scriptable Install System (NSIS) to generate Windows installer executables. They contain the logic, file paths, registry edits, and uninstaller configurations needed to deploy software on a Windows system. A secondary, obscure use is as proprietary game data files for Nintendo games developed by Eighting, specifically in the Naruto Shippuden series.

To open or edit an .NSI script, developers typically use code editors like Notepad++ or Visual Studio Code. To turn the script into a functional installer, it must be compiled locally using the official NSIS compiler tool, makensis.exe.

Users frequently struggle with .NSI files because they mistakenly assume the file itself is the installer. A major disadvantage of this format is that it acts only as a blueprint. It does not contain the actual software assets, but rather points to local directories where those files reside. Consequently, sharing an .NSI file with a client does not share the actual software program. Compiling an .NSI file also routinely fails if the host computer is missing external plugins or macro files (NSH) referenced in the code.

The best targets for format conversion are TXT, MD, or PDF if you simply need to share or document the script logic.

Converting an .NSI script directly into an EXE file using standard online converters is impossible. Web-based converters fail because compiling an executable requires a full build environment, access to the original developer's local hard drive for assets, and specific NSIS plugins. Because NSIS scripts are plain text, our platform can instantly extract the code, allowing you to read the installation logic safely without compiling anything.

Convert.Guru analyzes your NSI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ELD, ZS and RVB files.

The NSI Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NSI converter.
