The .NRT file extension is primarily associated with two completely different, highly proprietary formats: the legacy Nokia Ringtone and the Neat Contact File.
First, as a Nokia Ringtone, this format was used by early Nokia mobile phones to store monophonic or polyphonic melodies. The main disadvantage of this format is its obsolescence. It is entirely incompatible with modern smartphones, operating systems, and web browsers. To actually listen to these melodies today, users must convert the .NRT file into a standard audio format like MP3 or WAV.
Second, an .NRT file can be a Neat Contact File created by Neat receipt and document scanners. This is a closed, proprietary database format designed to store scanned business card data. The primary disadvantage here is vendor lock-in; the format traps user data within the Neat ecosystem. Users who want to migrate their contacts to modern CRM systems or address books need to convert these files to CSV or VCF.
Both versions of the .NRT file format are notoriously difficult to open or convert. Standard online converters fail to process them because the structures are completely undocumented.
