About NRT files
The .NRT file extension generally refers to the Nokia Ringtone format, a legacy audio container used by older Nokia mobile phones to store monophonic or simple polyphonic ringtones. Unlike modern MP3 or AAC files which contain actual recorded waveforms, .NRT files typically store musical note data (pitch and duration) similar to MIDI.
Because this format is obsolete and proprietary to legacy hardware, standard media players like VLC Media Player or Windows Media Player cannot open them. You are effectively locked out of listening to these nostalgic tones on modern smartphones (iOS/Android) or computers without specialized conversion. To make these files usable again, the best approach is converting them to MIDI (to preserve the note data for editing) or MP3 (for universal playback).
Note: A secondary, less common use for this extension is the Neat Contact File generated by older scanners and software from The Neat Company. These files contain proprietary contact data (business cards) and are incompatible with standard address books like Outlook unless exported to CSV or VCF using the original legacy software.
