About NIL files

A .nil file is a Norton Install Library or Icon Library file, historically associated with Symantec (now Gen Digital) system optimization tools like Norton Utilities. Technically, this file is often a standard Windows Portable Executable (PE) - specifically a DLL or EXE - that has been renamed to .nil to serve as a proprietary container for application resources. These files typically house the rich icon sets, bitmaps, and installation scripts used by the Norton interface.

Because .nil is a system-specific extension, standard operating systems do not know how to open it, and it cannot be edited in text editors like Notepad++. Users generally encounter these files when troubleshooting a corrupt installation or attempting to extract high-quality legacy icons. To access the internal content, you cannot simply "convert" the file in a traditional sense; instead, you must usually rename the extension to DLL or EXE to inspect it, or use a resource extraction tool like Resource Hacker to save the embedded icons as ICO or PNG files for use in other projects.

Convert.Guru analyzes your NIL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted BHF, NUF and SHF files.

The NIL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NIL converter.
