The .nick file extension is primarily used as a game save or configuration file for titles like Painkiller: Hell & Damnation and Nickelodeon Kart Racers 2. Alternatively, older PC systems use it as a legacy Microsoft Outlook 2000 Nickname file, which stores auto-complete email addresses.
These files are highly proprietary and purpose-built. Game saves are often encoded in a binary format, meaning they cannot be opened by standard text editors without showing gibberish. Outlook .nick files are entirely obsolete, having been replaced by NK2 and later internal Exchange data models. This makes it extremely difficult to extract old contact data without specialized legacy recovery tools.
If you need to migrate old Outlook data, extracting and converting the file to standard CSV or TXT is the best path to import contacts into modern email clients. For game saves, converting to XML or JSON might allow modding, though this depends entirely on the game engine's internal structure and may break the save if altered incorrectly.
Game data and legacy software formats are notoriously difficult to open or convert because they lack universal data standards.
