About NBR files

The .nbr file extension is notorious for format collision. It is actively used for three completely different file types: Network-Based Recordings from Cisco Webex, Genome neighbors data files from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), and system benchmark results from the Novabench utility.

The primary disadvantage of the .nbr format is this shared extension. Standard operating systems cannot guess the correct application to open the file, leading to constant "unsupported format" errors. Cisco Webex recordings are proprietary and often locked to the Webex ecosystem. Novabench files require the benchmarking suite to visualize the data properly. NCBI genome files are highly specialized bioinformatics datasets that standard text editors struggle to format gracefully.

Conversion depends entirely on the file's origin. Webex .nbr files are often internally structured as standard MP4 video files. You can convert them to MP4 for universal playback, though specialized metadata may be lost. Novabench benchmark files contain structured data that should be converted to JSON or CSV for data analysis. NCBI genome files contain nucleotide neighbor sequences that are best exported as TXT or standard bioinformatics formats like FASTA.

Because this is a multi-use extension, it is difficult to open or convert blindly. Standard online converters fail because they rely on the file extension rather than inspecting the internal headers. Often only the original software can properly read or export the data. Just drag and drop your file into convert.guru to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - like an MP4 video stream or a JSON telemetry string - viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your NBR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted KDT, MCC and BEF files.

The NBR Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NBR converter.
