About NBN files
An .nbn file is a proprietary digital note created by Notability, a popular note-taking application by Ginger Labs for iOS and macOS. These files are essentially compressed archives that bundle handwritten strokes, typed text, embedded images, and linked audio recordings (such as lecture syncs) into a single package. A common issue for users is the ecosystem lock-in: .nbn files cannot be opened natively on Windows, Android, or Linux without specific conversion tools or the original app. Internally, the file acts as a ZIP container holding a PDF background, XML/Plist metadata for ink strokes, and audio files. For universal access, users should convert these notes to PDF for reading and printing, or extract the contents to a ZIP file to access individual images and MP3/M4A audio recordings separately.
Convert.Guru analyzes your NBN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The NBN Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NBN converter.
