The .naz file extension is primarily a legacy game data container used to store compressed audio assets. It is most famously associated with Grand Theft Auto 2 (where it utilizes the proprietary NAZ7 compression algorithm for radio station tracks) and Croteam's Serious Sam series (often wrapping standard Ogg Vorbis audio). Users typically encounter these files when digging through game installation directories to extract soundtracks or voice lines. The core problem with .naz files is their lack of interoperability; standard media players like VLC media player or Windows Media Player cannot play them natively, treating them as unknown binary data.
Outside of gaming, a minority of .naz files are compressed seismic data logs generated by Guralp Systems instrumentation. These are highly technical files used in geophysics and cannot be opened by text editors or standard graph tools without specific drivers. For game audio, the best conversion workflow is extracting the payload and converting it to MP3 or WAV for universal playback.
