About NAL files

A .NAL file is primarily a Novell Application Launcher object, a specialized network shortcut used by Novell ZENworks (now managed by Micro Focus) to deploy software in corporate environments. Unlike a standard Windows shortcut (LNK), a NAL file does not link directly to a local executable; instead, it contains a set of instructions that tell the ZENworks Agent where to find the application on the network, which permissions to check, and what parameters to apply.

Users typically encounter friction with these files when moving data from a managed work computer to a personal device - without the ZENworks infrastructure, the file is useless and cannot launch the program. It essentially acts as a "key" for a lock you no longer have access to. While you cannot "convert" a shortcut into the full software application, you can open the file with a text editor to inspect the target path and manually locate the executable if you still have network access.

In rare technical contexts, a .NAL file may contain raw Network Abstraction Layer units from H.264 or HEVC video streams. These are developer-centric dumps used for debugging video codecs and can be wrapped into playable containers like MP4 or MKV using tools like FFmpeg.

Convert.Guru analyzes your NAL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted HTA, JAR and 89K files.

The NAL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NAL converter.
