Convert a file to NAL
To convert other file formats to the "Application Shortcut Object" file type, you need software like Novell ZENworks or a similar tool.
About NAL files
The .NAL file extension represents a Novell Application Launcher object. It functions as a specialized application shortcut used primarily by Novell ZENworks to deploy and manage software across an enterprise network. Unlike a standard local shortcut, this file contains server network paths, execution arguments, access rights, and specific runtime environments required for the software to execute on a client machine.
Users encounter major limitations when dealing with this format because it is highly proprietary and legacy. A .NAL file requires a local Novell client installed on the machine to communicate with the central server; it will do absolutely nothing on a standard, unmanaged Windows or macOS computer. A common misconception is that standard converters can turn a .NAL file into a standalone program. This is impossible because the file only holds instructions, not the application itself. IT administrators migrating from legacy Novell ecosystems to modern solutions like Microsoft SCCM or Intune usually need to convert this file to extract the execution paths. The best conversion targets are TXT to read the configuration, or manually translating the instructions into a Windows LNK or BAT file.
This file format is difficult to open or convert because it is a closed, proprietary configuration format. Often, only the original Novell software can properly read or export the data. Standard online converters fail to process it. However, convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or extraction of the underlying network paths may still be possible. Just drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported.
Convert.Guru analyzes your NAL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert NAL file to INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, ENV, PROPERTIES or RC, you can use Novell ZENworks or similar software from the "Network Application Shortcut" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to NAL, try Novell ZENworks or another comparable tool in the "Network Application Shortcut" category.
The NAL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NAL converter.
