Convert MVS to another file type
To convert MVS scans to another format, you need OpenMVS or other 3D software.
Convert a file to MVS
To convert other file formats to the "Photogrammetry Scene" file type, you need software like OpenMVS or a similar tool.
About MVS files
The .MVS file extension is most frequently associated with the Multi-View Stereo format used by the OpenMVS library. These files act as project containers for photogrammetry workflows, storing essential data like camera poses, sparse point clouds, and scene definitions required to reconstruct 3D models from 2D images. While powerful for developers using command-line interface (CLI) tools, .MVS files are virtually useless to standard 3D modeling software like Blender or Autodesk Maya without conversion. They effectively lock your 3D data into a specific reconstruction pipeline, making it difficult to visualize, edit, or archive your work in a universally accessible format.
A secondary but significant use of this extension is in digital dentistry, specifically with Maestro 3D Dental Studio. Here, the .MVS file encapsulates 3D dental scans and project data. Users often encounter friction when trying to share these files with labs or patients who do not own the specific proprietary software. Additionally, older PC games from Electronic Arts utilize .MVS for music and video streams, creating further confusion for users trying to open them.
To make these files usable, the best approach is conversion based on the file's origin:
For Photogrammetry (OpenMVS): Convert to PLY or OBJ to edit the mesh in 3D sculpting tools or GLB for web viewing.
For Dental Scans: Convert to STL or OBJ, which are the industry standards for 3D printing and CAD interchange.
For Game Files: These require conversion to MP4 or WAV to be playable on modern media players.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MVS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert MVS file to AES, DWG, DXF, DGN, RVT, RFA, SKP, 3DM, STEP, IGES, SAT or X_T, you can use OpenMVS or similar software from the "3D Reconstruction Project" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to MVS, try OpenMVS or another comparable tool in the "3D Reconstruction Project" category.
The MVS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MVS converter.
