About MVS files

The .MVS file extension is heavily fragmented across several distinct industries. Most commonly, it is a Multi-View Stereo scene file generated by open-source photogrammetry pipelines like Meshroom and the OpenMVS library. These files store the dense point clouds and camera tracking data necessary for generating 3D models from photographs. Alternatively, the extension is used as a proprietary 3D dental scanner project file by specialized medical software such as Maestro 3D Dental Studio and 3dMD. Finally, in the gaming sphere, it exists as a legacy game movie stream for older Electronic Arts titles or as Neo Geo video game data for the MAME emulator.

Because .MVS files serve completely disparate domains, they present significant handling challenges. OpenMVS files are incredibly complex, massive in size, and require powerful GPUs to process into usable meshes. Dental .MVS files are proprietary, often locked behind expensive medical subscriptions, preventing patients or unaffiliated clinics from reviewing the raw scans natively. Legacy game data files are obsolete, utilizing undocumented video encoding that modern media players cannot decode. None of these formats are supported by standard operating systems or web browsers.

Standard online converters universally fail with .MVS files because they lack the specialized rendering engines required to interpret dense photogrammetry calculations, proprietary medical records, or legacy arcade ROMs. For 3D workflows, you must use the original software to compute the mesh and export standard targets like OBJ, PLY, or STL. For legacy media, specialized extraction scripts are needed to pull video into MP4 or AVI. However, just drag and drop your file onto convert.guru to see what it is and convert it if supported. Our platform can safely inspect the binary header to identify which of the completely different .MVS versions you have, extract readable text, and check for standard embedded streams that might still be salvageable.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MVS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MG, SCORE, FMF and AES files.

FAQ

If you want to convert MVS file to AES, DWG, DXF, DGN, RVT, RFA, SKP, 3DM, STEP, IGES, SAT or X_T, you can use Meshroom or similar software from the "3D Photogrammetry & Game Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to MVS, try Meshroom or another comparable tool in the "3D Photogrammetry & Game Data" category.

The MVS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MVS converter.
