The .mtv extension primarily identifies a proprietary video format used by older, inexpensive portable media players (often marketed as MP3/MP4 players from China). Unlike standard MP4 files, these .MTV files were engineered to avoid MPEG-4 licensing fees and reduce processor load on cheap hardware. They function by displaying a stream of uncompressed raw image frames (RGB565/555) synchronized with an MP3 audio track. Consequently, users often find these files to be surprisingly large in size despite their low resolution (typically 128x128 or 160x128). Because this is a non-standard format, modern media players like QuickTime or Windows Media Player will fail to open them. A secondary, less common use of the .mtv extension is for video export files created by Panasonic DVD-MovieAlbumSE software. These are typically associated with DVD-RAM camcorders and recorders. While higher quality than the portable player variety, they are equally difficult to play outside of their original proprietary ecosystem and should be converted to MPEG-2 or MP4 for archiving.
