The .MT2 file extension is most commonly a MadTracker 2 Module, a type of tracker music file. Tracker files contain both short audio samples and a sequencing matrix that tells the software when to play them. A secondary, but significant, use for the .MT2 extension is MoTeC Track Data, which stores telemetry and track mapping data for motorsport analysis using MoTeC i2 Pro.
Both formats present massive compatibility challenges. .MT2 audio files are proprietary and tied to MadTracker, a software ecosystem that is heavily outdated and largely unsupported on modern operating systems. You cannot play an .MT2 file in standard media players, web browsers, or smartphones. Similarly, MoTeC telemetry files lock your racing data into specialized, proprietary software, preventing custom external analysis.
Converting these files is the only realistic way to make them usable today. For audio, convert your .MT2 modules to WAV for high-quality, lossless editing or MP3 for easy playback on any device. Note that converting a tracker module flattens the sequence and samples into a single audio stream, meaning you permanently lose the ability to edit individual notes and patterns.
