The most common use (approx. 52%) is the MadTracker 2 Module, a sophisticated music project file created by MadTracker. Unlike simple audio files like MP3 or WAV, an MT2 file functions more like a digital music score; it contains note patterns, instrument samples, volume envelopes, and effect settings (including support for VST plugins). The main friction point for users is that standard media players (Windows Media Player, iPhone) cannot play these files directly. To listen to an MT2 composition outside the editor, you must render or convert it to a standard stream format like WAV or MP3.
The second common use (approx. 23%) is the MoTeC Track Map file, utilized by MoTeC in their i2 Pro and i2 Standard data analysis software. These files store the geometrical layout of a race track (corners, straights, GPS coordinates) to overlay telemetry data. These are proprietary binary files locked to the MoTeC ecosystem. Users typically interact with these when analyzing motorsport telemetry logs (answer first: typical log files are LD or LDX) and need to visualize the car's position. Converting these is complex, often requiring the MoTeC software to export the underlying data to CSV or MAT formats for use in Excel or MATLAB.
