About MSQ files
The .MSQ file primarily functions as either a highly compressed game data archive created by the Masquerade Repack Group or an engine tuning configuration file used by MegaSquirt engine control units (ECUs). Game repack files use custom FreeArc compression algorithms to drastically shrink large game installations. Engine tune files store calibration maps and fuel injection parameters in an underlying XML structure used by TunerStudio MS. Rare uses also include message queue files for GE Digital CIMPLICITY and legacy 3D meshes for older Tomb Raider games.
Working with .MSQ files presents severe challenges. The Masquerade repack files are proprietary and closed. They are not standard archives, meaning standard tools like WinRAR or 7-Zip will often throw error messages or refuse to extract them. They force users to rely on the custom repack installer. On the other hand, the MegaSquirt ECU tune files lock data into software-specific XML schemas that are practically unreadable to mechanics who do not own a TunerStudio license.
Users often need to convert these files to bypass these limitations. Engine tune files are best converted to CSV for viewing in Excel or PDF for easy printing and sharing with automotive tuners. Converting the repack archives is virtually impossible; they must be decompressed to standard game files instead.
Because .MSQ spans highly specialized and proprietary domains - from custom repack scripts to automotive calibration maps - finding a universal converter is difficult. Often, only the original software can correctly parse or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying format like XML text, viewing or conversion may still be seamlessly possible.

The MSQ Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MSQ converter.
