About MRS files

The .MRS file extension serves several distinct, often proprietary, purposes across different software ecosystems. Most commonly, it is a Game Resource Archive utilized by the RealSpace engine developed by MAIET Entertainment for games like GunZ: The Duel. These files pack XML configurations, textures, and 3D models into a single compressed container to optimize load times. Alternatively, modern users will encounter .MRS files as Scanned 3D Room Models exported by the Magicplan application. Other variants include compiled proxy rulesets for Clash.Meta and proprietary room scene designs for 2020 Fusion.

Working with .MRS files is notoriously frustrating because the format heavily depends on its origin. MAIET game archives are closed, proprietary blobs that require community-made MRS decompilers to unpack. They cannot be opened directly in standard image or text editors. Magicplan .MRS files are essentially renamed ZIP archives containing standard web assets, but the obscure extension prevents operating systems from recognizing them. Clash.Meta rulesets are compiled binaries that obscure the original YAML configuration, making manual editing impossible without recompilation.

If your goal is to extract assets or edit 3D spaces, conversion is mandatory. For Magicplan files, the best conversion target is ZIP - which allows you to extract the underlying images and XML data - or 3D formats like OBJ or DXF if supported by the original export. Game modders must extract .MRS to its raw XML and texture components to alter gameplay.

Standard online converters universally fail with .MRS files because they cannot distinguish between an archaic game archive, a modern 3D floor plan, or a compiled networking ruleset. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - like a ZIP container in a Magicplan file - viewing or extraction may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MRS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PI, FEN and SBA files.

The MRS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MRS converter.
