About MPV files
MPV files are raw MPEG-2 video elementary streams, commonly created during DVD authoring or by legacy VHS-to-DVD capture software like Honestech. Unlike standard video files (like MP4 or AVI), an .MPV file contains only visual data and absolutely no audio. This often confuses users who open the file in a media player and wonder why the sound is missing - the audio is typically stored in a separate companion file (such as MPA, AC3, or WAV).
Because .MPV is a raw stream rather than a container, it lacks the metadata headers required by many modern web browsers and mobile devices, making it impossible to upload directly to platforms like YouTube or view on an iPhone. To fix the "no sound" issue or make the file shareable, you must either multiplex (mux) the video back with its audio track or convert the stream into a universally compatible format. For general viewing and web use, converting to MP4 (H.264) is the industry standard. For editing in software like Adobe Premiere Pro, converting to MOV or .ProRes ensures smoother playback. Using convert.guru allows you to quickly transform these raw streams into playable videos without needing complex authoring software.
