About MPLS files

An .MPLS file is a Blu-ray Disc Movie Playlist located within the BDMV/PLAYLIST directory of a Blu-ray disc. It serves as a navigational map, instructing the player on the exact sequence to play audio and video clips (stored as M2TS files). This allows for complex playback features like multi-angle viewing and seamless branching, where different versions of a movie (e.g., Theatrical vs. Director's Cut) are assembled from the same set of video segments.

While critical for the disc structure, .MPLS files are technically just metadata containers. They are small (often kilobits in size) and contain no actual video or audio data. A major catch for users is attempting to play an isolated .MPLS file without the accompanying STREAM folder containing the massive M2TS files; without these source clips, the playlist is useless. Furthermore, standard media players often fail to interpret standalone playlist files correctly, requiring the entire folder structure to function. To make the content accessible on PCs, mobiles, or streaming servers, users must process the .MPLS file to locate the correct video stream and convert it into a standalone container. Best targets include MKV for preserving all audio tracks and subtitles (lossless archiving) or MP4 (H.264/HEVC) for broad compatibility with TVs and web use. convert.guru simplifies this by analyzing the playlist structure to help you extract and merge the underlying video content.

The MPLS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MPLS converter.
