A .MPLS file is a proprietary Blu-ray Movie Playlist created by the Blu-ray Disc Association. It resides in the BDMV/PLAYLIST directory of a physical Blu-ray disc or backup. Instead of storing actual audio or video data, it acts as a navigation map. It instructs media players like VLC media player which heavy M2TS video stream files to play, handling chapters, angles, and playback order.
The major disadvantage of the .MPLS format is that it confuses average users. People often copy a tiny .MPLS file to their desktop, expecting it to be the entire movie. When they upload it to a standard online video converter, the process immediately fails because the actual gigabytes of media data are missing. It requires the complete, original disc structure to function. Furthermore, commercial Blu-rays use a frustrating DRM technique called "playlist obfuscation," which intentionally generates hundreds of fake .MPLS files to break copying tools.
To get a playable standalone video file, you must process the actual disc contents to an MKV or MP4 using a dedicated ripper like MakeMKV or HandBrake.
