The .mou file is a proprietary compressed archive and virtual disk format developed by WinMount International. It is designed to be mounted directly to a virtual drive, allowing users to access archived files instantly without extracting them to a physical hard drive first. You must use the official WinMount utility to open, mount, or extract these files.
Users frequently need to convert .mou files because the format is highly restrictive and outdated. It is a closed, proprietary format that requires specific, Windows-only software to open. If you send a .mou file to a colleague or client without the WinMount utility, they will be unable to open it. It is not supported by macOS, Linux, or modern web browsers.

While you will lose the specific 'direct mount' functionality native to the WinMount software, you will gain universal compatibility.
