About MOU files
A .MOU file is a proprietary compressed archive format created by WinMount, a utility designed to mount archives as virtual disks. Unlike standard ZIP or RAR files that typically require extraction before use, .MOU files allow users to access contained data immediately by simulating a physical drive letter (e.g., Z:) in Windows Explorer. While this "mount-on-the-fly" capability saves disk space and time, the format is a common source of difficulty for modern users: it is heavily locked into the WinMount ecosystem, which has waned in popularity and may lack full compatibility with newer operating systems like Windows 11. Consequently, sharing a .MOU file is often impractical, as the recipient likely lacks the specific software required to open it. For long-term accessibility and broader compatibility, it is highly recommended to convert these archives into standard ZIP files for general data storage, or to standard ISO disk images if preserving the mountable structure is necessary.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MOU file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert MOU file to ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, GZ, BZ2, XZ, LZMA, CAB, ACE, ARJ or LHA, you can use WinMount or similar software from the "Compressed Virtual Disk" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert XXE, 7Z, Z, PAK, LHA, DEB, UUE, TAR, LZH, ZIP, PKG or RAR files to MOU, try WinMount or another comparable tool in the "Compressed Virtual Disk" category.
The MOU Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MOU converter.
