About MOF files
The .MOF extension serves two distinct, highly technical purposes that often confuse users. Primarily, it functions as a Managed Object Format file - a text-based definition used by Microsoft’s Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) to describe system classes and Common Information Model (CIM) repositories. Users often struggle with these files because they are essentially uncompiled code; opening them requires a text editor, but compiling them requires the command-line Mofcomp.exe utility, making them inaccessible to non-developers.
However, a significant portion of .MOF files (approx. 63%) are binary Revit Material Override files used by Autodesk Revit. Unlike the text variant, these are proprietary Microsoft Compound files that cannot be viewed in Notepad and are strictly locked to the Revit ecosystem. This format fragmentation causes significant friction: users attempting to debug a Revit installation may find a binary blob when expecting text, or vice versa.
Best Conversion Targets:
For Documentation & Archiving: Convert text-based MOF scripts to PDF or PDF/A. This preserves the code structure for compliance logs without risking accidental syntax modification.
For Review & Web: Convert to HTML or TXT to view class definitions in a browser or lightweight editor without needing developer tools.
For Revit Files: While direct conversion to image formats is limited due to proprietary data, our tools can help identify the file structure, confirming whether you hold a corrupt binary or a valid configuration file.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MOF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert MOF file to CSV, MP4, INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML or ENV, you can use Microsoft Windows or similar software from the "System Management & BIM Materials" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to MOF, try Microsoft Windows or another comparable tool in the "System Management & BIM Materials" category.
The MOF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MOF converter.
