A .MFS file is primarily a proprietary surveillance video stream file created by Milestone XProtect security software. It stores raw, continuous video feeds from IP cameras. The extension is also actively used as a project save file for Clickteam Fusion 2.5 (previously Multimedia Fusion 2) and as a school statutory returns data fileset generated by Capita SIMS.
The primary disadvantage of the .MFS format is its heavily fragmented and proprietary nature. Surveillance video files are locked down and sometimes encrypted to ensure chain-of-evidence integrity. Because of this, they require a $50/month subscription or specific enterprise software to open. They are impossible to play in standard media players like VLC, and standard online video converters will fail to process them. Clickteam Fusion project files require the original software to open, and Capita SIMS files are restricted to UK school administration systems.
