About MEL files
The .MEL extension is most frequently associated with the Maya Embedded Language, a scripting language used by Autodesk Maya to define scene hierarchies, create custom user interfaces, and automate modeling tasks. While these files are fundamentally plain text, they rely on the Maya command engine to execute. A common catch for technical directors and 3D artists is sharing these scripts with non-technical stakeholders or archiving them for documentation; opening them in standard text editors like Notepad often results in poor formatting without syntax highlighting. Converting .MEL scripts to PDF or HTML creates a portable, readable format for code review or archiving.
However, you may also encounter .MEL files originating from Melodos, a legacy melody software by M-Audio. These are binary music files similar to MID, and users often struggle to open them because the software is discontinued. In this case, converting to standard MIDI or MP3 is essential for preservation. Finally, in scientific contexts, .MEL can refer to Gel Electrophoresis analysis files created by Melanie software (GE Healthcare). These are often just renamed TIFF images. If your file fails to open in a text editor, it is likely one of these binary formats. For Melanie files, converting to JPG or PNG ensures the scientific imagery is viewable in standard web browsers.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MEL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted EML, TXT, MLL, ANIMS, BRS and PYTHON files.
The MEL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MEL converter.
