1. Mamiya Raw Image (Photography):
Although statistically rarer (approx. 1% of files), this is the most common format users actively seek to convert. Generated by Mamiya (now Phase One) digital backs like the Mamiya ZD, this is a proprietary raw container storing uncompressed sensor data. These files are massive (often 50MB+) and cannot be viewed in standard browsers or Windows Photo Viewer. To share or edit them, you must convert them to widely supported formats like JPG, PNG, or TIFF.
2. ALI Corporation Firmware (Satellite/STB):
The most common .mef file (approx. 28%) is a firmware update package for satellite receivers using ALI Corporation chipsets. These are binary "blobs" designed strictly for hardware flashing via USB. Warning: These cannot be "opened" or "converted" to readable text on a PC. Attempting to force-open them in Word or Notepad will result in garbled gibberish. They are meant exclusively for the Software Upgrade menu of your set-top box.
3. MATRIXX Event Log (Telecom/Data):
Used by MATRIXX Software for high-volume event logging, these files are often structured XML data masked with the .mef extension. Unlike firmware, these can be converted. Renaming the extension to XML or opening them in a text editor often reveals readable structured data, which can then be imported into Excel or converted to CSV for analysis.
