About MDG files

The .MDG file format is primarily used as a Mindomo diagram file or a 2D vector drawing created by My-Drawing software. It stores mind maps, concept maps, and vector-based diagrams using an internal JSON structure. A smaller subset of .MDG files function as Digital Geometric Models developed by DInsight.

Users typically open these files using Mindomo for diagramming or specialized 2D CAD tools for geometric models. For more information on the principles behind mind mapping files, see the Mind map Wikipedia page.

The main disadvantage of the .MDG format is its proprietary nature. It creates vendor lock-in, meaning you must have an active subscription or the specific desktop application installed to view or edit the file. Files exceed standard viewing capabilities and cannot be natively viewed in standard web browsers or standard image viewers. Because the extension uses a proprietary JSON schema, standard online converters often fail to process .MDG files as they lack the specific parsing engine required for Mindomo's vector paths and nodes.

To share these diagrams with clients or colleagues, you must convert the .MDG file to widely supported formats like PDF for document sharing, or PNG and SVG for scalable images. Note that converting to a static raster format like PNG will remove the interactive, collapsible elements of the original mind map.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because often only the original software can properly read or export the data. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MDG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DXF, MSG, MDF, SIG, MDJ, G3D, MOM, TIN and DGN files.

The MDG Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MDG converter.
