About MBD files
The .mbd extension is primarily associated with Movie Magic Budgeting (MMB), the industry-standard software created by Entertainment Partners for estimating film and TV production costs. These files function as specialized databases containing detailed line items, fringe benefits, and global budgeting variables. The main drawback for users is the proprietary nature of the format; opening an MBD file typically requires a paid license for Movie Magic Budgeting, which can be cost-prohibitive for casual reviewers or students. Consequently, users frequently need to convert these budgets into PDF for universal viewing or Excel (XLSX) to manipulate the data in standard spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel.
A secondary, yet significant, use of the .mbd extension is for project files created by the legacy software Multimedia Builder (MMBuilder) by MediaChance. These files were popular in the Windows XP era for creating autorun CD menus and simple multimedia apps. Since MMBuilder is largely discontinued, users with these files often face compatibility lock-outs on modern operating systems. For these legacy projects, the goal is often to extract embedded assets (images, audio) or convert the logic, though direct conversion is difficult without the original environment.

The MBD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MBD converter.
