The .MAB file format is primarily used as a Mozilla Address Book file by Mozilla Thunderbird and SeaMonkey to store local email contacts, names, and phone numbers. The two most common default files are abook.mab (Personal Address Book) and history.mab (Collected Addresses). Other rare software using this extension include SKF Machine Analyst, Ubisoft's Dunia Engine (for animations), and CRI Atom Craft Engine (for game audio).
Users often need to convert .MAB files because the format uses a proprietary, legacy variant of the Mork database format. It is notoriously difficult to read outside of Mozilla software, lacking native support in modern web browsers, spreadsheet tools like Microsoft Excel, or mobile operating systems. The Mork database structure is unstructured and historically criticized for being overly complex and difficult to parse.
The best conversion targets for a .MAB file are standard contact formats like CSV (Comma Separated Values) or VCF (vCard). Converting to CSV allows easy importing into Excel or Google Contacts, while VCF is ideal for Apple and Android mobile devices. Note that converting complex contact groupings might result in the loss of proprietary mailing list structures.
