Convert a file to LXA
To convert other file formats to the "Speech Engine Lexicon" file type, you need software like Microsoft Speech API or a similar tool.
About LXA files
The .LXA file is a proprietary data container that primarily functions as a Microsoft Speech Lexicon File used by the Microsoft Speech API (SAPI) to store custom pronunciation rules. Alternatively, it is widely encountered as a packed audio archive in legacy Xbox video games like MechAssault, or as a backup container created by discontinued Lexar Jumpshot USB media.
To interact with speech-based .LXA files, developers must utilize Windows SAPI tools. Game audio archives require specialized community-built extractors to unpack the sound data, while the Lexar variants rely exclusively on the original legacy backup utility.
Users typically need to convert .LXA files because they are completely undocumented and locked to their parent applications. SAPI lexicons are compiled into unreadable binary data, meaning you cannot review your custom dictionary rules in a standard editor. Game audio archives bundle dozens of sound clips into one large block, preventing you from playing the music or sound effects in modern audio players.
When extracting game audio, the best target formats are standard WAV or MP3 files. For lexicon data, exporting to plain TXT or XML is ideal for reading the raw pronunciation strings, though native compilation tools are required for this export.
Because these formats are heavily closed and serve multiple unrelated purposes, standard online converters fail to process them. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. However, just drag and drop your file onto convert.guru to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. Our analyzer can inspect the binary header to detect the specific type of .LXA file and attempt to extract embedded text or underlying media.
Convert.Guru analyzes your LXA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert LXA file to TMP, TEMP, CACHE, LOG, BAK, OLD, NEW, PART, DOWNLOAD, CRDOWNLOAD, LOCK or PID, you can use Microsoft Speech API or similar software from the "Compiled Speech Lexicon Database" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DEVICE, CACHE, SOCK, SYMLINK, PID, MOUNT, FIFO, LOG, PIPE, TMP, JUNCTION or TEMP files to LXA, try Microsoft Speech API or another comparable tool in the "Compiled Speech Lexicon Database" category.
The LXA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LXA converter.
