About LXA files

The .lxa extension identifies two primary, yet completely different, file types that often confuse users: compiled pronunciation dictionaries for the Microsoft Speech API (SAPI) and compressed audio archives from the classic MechAssault game series.

If you are dealing with the SAPI format, the file contains binary data used to teach text-to-speech engines how to pronounce specific words. The major problem here is that .lxa files are "compiled" - you cannot simply open them in a text editor like Notepad++ to add a new word. To make changes, you typically need the original source text; without it, the file is effectively a locked black box. Users frequently need to convert these back to XML or TXT to audit or update phonetic rules.

Alternatively, if the file originated from MechAssault, it is a proprietary container holding game sound effects and voice lines. These files are not recognized by standard players like VLC or Windows Media Player. Modders and archivists often struggle to access this content without specific extraction tools. The ideal workflow is converting these containers to standard WAV or MP3 files for listening or editing.

Convert.Guru analyzes your LXA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted LE, VTU and WBL files.
