About LWV files

The .lwv file format is a proprietary Linguistically Enhanced Sound File developed by Microsoft. It typically contains a standard audio recording paired with deep linguistic metadata, such as word boundaries, phoneme alignments, and text transcriptions. These files are used primarily in speech recognition training and linguistic analysis applications. You can sometimes open them using Microsoft Speech API tools or specialized linguistic software. The main problem with the .lwv format is its rigid, proprietary nature. Standard audio players often fail to parse the embedded linguistic payload, causing playback errors or refusing to open the file entirely. Furthermore, extracting the text transcription is frustrating because the data is locked inside a binary wrapper. Standard online converters fail to process it because they lack the specific decoders for Microsoft's legacy speech data structures. If you only want to listen to the recording, your best conversion targets are WAV or MP3. If you need the transcriptions, converting to TXT or XML is ideal. However, converting to standard audio formats will permanently strip away the phoneme boundaries and linguistic metadata. This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because it is a closed system. Often, only the original Microsoft speech software can properly read or export the combined data. Just drag and drop your .lwv file to convert.guru to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. Our system can inspect the file, reveal internal text, and if we detect a supported underlying audio stream, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
