A .LOP file is primarily a specialized industrial document used by Brady LINK360 and the legacy LockoutPro software. Its main purpose is to store Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) procedures - critical safety instructions used to isolate energy sources (like electrical breakers or valves) during machinery maintenance. These files are essentially structured containers that hold text instructions, compliance data, and embedded images of the specific machinery.
For most users, the challenge with .LOP files is their proprietary nature. They are strictly tied to the Brady ecosystem, meaning you typically cannot open them without a licensed copy of Brady Workstation or LINK360, which can be expensive and restricted to specific workstations. This creates friction when sharing safety procedures with external auditors, safety inspectors, or contractors who do not have the software installed.
To overcome this, the standard conversion target is PDF. Converting a LOP file to PDF ensures that safety tags and procedures can be universally viewed, printed, and physically attached to machinery as required by OSHA regulations. Additionally, because many .LOP files effectively function as ZIP containers holding XML data and assets, advanced users can sometimes rename the extension to ZIP to extract the raw photos of the machinery without opening the software.
Note: A rare secondary use of the .LOP extension is for MasterCook layout files, which define how recipes are arranged when printed.
