The .LOL file extension is a unique case of file format collision, primarily associated with gaming and esoteric programming. In roughly half of all cases, a .lol file is a data archive used in the League of Legends ecosystem, often generated by third-party recording tools like Fraps or legacy replay managers (e.g., LOLPRO services). These files are typically renamed ZIP containers holding game metrics, replay data, or screenshots. Users frequently struggle with these because they cannot be opened directly by the modern League of Legends client (which uses ROFL files) or standard media players.
The second most common use (though technically a smaller market share) is for source code written in LOLCODE, an esoteric programming language based on internet slang (e.g., "HAI", "KTHXBYE"). These are simple Text files. Users need to convert these files to make them usable: extracting the ZIP contents for game data, or converting the LOLCODE script to TXT or PDF for easier reading and documentation. Less commonly, .LOL files may be proprietary 3D static meshes from Lineage II or compiled Lua scripts from the Saints Row series, both of which are highly distinct, locked formats requiring specialized modding tools.
